Wyndham Art Prize Draws Record Number Of Entries

A record number of artists have entered the prestigious 2017 Wyndham Art Prize for the chance to win $18,000 in prizes.

More than 130 artists have submitted artworks for the major exhibition, with 89 artists have been selected.

Their artworks include small and large sculptures, videos, photography, drawings, paintings, animations and inventive two dimensional pieces.

Wyndham City’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Portfolio Holder, Cr Tony Hooper, said the annual art prize had continued to attract some of the best artists from all around Australia.

“The Wyndham Art Prize has become known as a prestigious event which offers local and emerging artists a chance to exhibit their work alongside some of the most accomplished artists in Australia,” Cr Hooper said.

“This year has seen the Wyndham Art Prize’s reputation continue, with a record 130 artists entering their work and 89 artists being selected to take part in the exhibition.”

“First place will see $10,000 awarded to one talented artist, while $2,000 will be given to the winner of the People’s Choice Award. Deakin University will also offer study grants of $4000 and $2000 to allow two eligible entrants to undertake a PhD and Masters degree at the university.”

“We are extremely lucky here in Wyndham to be home to such a popular event that brings such talented artists together. I encourage anyone who would like to see both local artworks and pieces from as far away as Far North Queensland up close to come along to the Wyndham Art Gallery to view an exhibition of the works. While you are there you can place your vote for the People’s Choice Award.”

The 2017 Wyndham Art Prize Exhibition will be held at the Wyndham Art Gallery, 177 Watton St Werribee from Thursday 6th April to Sunday 11th June, 2017. Votes for the People’s Choice Award will be accepted until 4th June, 2017.
